伊集院光「僕は落語家になって6年目のある日、若き日の談志師匠のやった『ひなつば』のテープを聞いてショックを受けたんです。『芝浜』や『死神』ならいざ知らず、その時自分がやっている落語と、同じ年代の頃に談志師匠がやった落語のクオリティーの差に、もうどうしようもないほどの衝撃を受けたんです。決して埋まらないであろう差がわかったんです。そしてしばらしくして落語を辞めました」

立川談志「うまい理屈が見つかったじゃねぇか」

伊集院光「本当です！」

立川談志「本当だろうよ。本当だろうけど、本当の本当は違うね。まず最初にその時お前さんは落語が辞めたかったんだよ。『飽きちゃった』とか『自分に実力がないことに本能的に気づいちゃった』か、簡単な理由でね。もっといや『なんだかわからないけどただ辞めたかった』んダネ。
　けど人間なんてものは、今までやってきたことをただ理由なく辞めるなんざ、格好悪くて出来ないもんなんだ。そしたらそこに渡りに船で俺の噺があった。『名人談志の落語にショックを受けて』辞めるなら、自分にも余所にも理屈つくってなわけだ。本当の本当のところは、『嫌ンなるのに理屈なんざねェ』わな」

図星だった。もちろん『ショックを受けてやめた』ことは本当だし、嘘をついたり言い訳をしたつもりなどなかったが、自分でも今の今まで気がつかなかった本当のところはそんなところかもしれないと思った。10年もの間、いの一番に自分がだまされていたのだから、完全には飲み込めていないけれど。
